Soft Tissue Therapy

Perhaps you’ve heard of Physiotherapy, Sports Massage or even Remedial Massage, but not Soft Tissue Therapy?

spine_ScillySoft Tissue Therapy (STT) is a powerful clinical practice based on clinical massage and specialised manual physical therapy techniques. These techniques include soft tissue release (STR), neuromuscular technique (NMT), muscle energy technique (MET), positional release techniques (PRT), connective tissue techniques, postural analysis and joint assessment.

Soft Tissue Therapy aims to treat and assist recovery of those with minor chronic pain issues or post-acute musculo-skeletal injuries. Soft tissue therapy evolved from sports and remedial massage, largely in response to a decline in use of hands-on treatment methods among physiotherapists. Many STT techniques derive from practices used in manual physiotherapy and osteopathy as well as methods such as Rolfing and trigger point therapy.

While Soft Tissue Therapy is based primarily on hands-on physical therapy, soft tissue therapists can also make postural and joint assessments and typically provide self-care suggestions on stretching, strengthening exercises, posture and lifestyle changes that may enhance the effectiveness of treatments and aid recovery from injury.

LSSM_logoMel Cash of the Institute of Sport & Remedial Massage sums up what soft tissue therapists do: “Soft Tissue Therapists can safely assess, treat, and rehabilitate acute or chronic minor soft tissue conditions caused by injury, sport, lifestyle stress or illness. As well as addressing the primary problem, they analyse a wide range of other contributing factors, enabling them to provide treatment and remedial/preventative exercise/lifestyle advice to help avert further injury, and improve physical and psychological wellbeing in the longer term.”

I enjoy offering my own unique approach, combining Soft Tissue Therapy with beneficial holistic neuro-muscular techniques such as Reflexology.

In June 2019 I complete my Level 5 BTEC Diploma in Soft Tissue Therapy at the London School of Sports Massage (LSSM) and will be professionally qualified as a Soft Tissue Therapist and Member of the ISRM (Institute of Sport & Remedial Massage).
